Energy Crisis in Pakistan Essay

Pakistan is a developing country, along with so many other problems, energy crisis in Pakistan is been an unsolved matter since it came into being. Pakistan is rich in natural resources but government is not been able to produce enough energy even to fulfill the basic energy needs of the country, hence facing huge energy crisis.
Pakistan is the world's fifth most populous country with a population of 230.4 million people and it is growing rapidly. Increase in population is increasing the demand of energy, eventually creating a huge gap between demand and supply of the energy, resulting into energy crisis in Pakistan.
Lower production of energy creates loadshedding of electricity and gas, which effects the life of every individual as well as the industrial sector of the country. When industrial sector do not get its required amount of energy, it directly effects its production and eventually it creates economic instability within the country. This whole process is one of the major causes of inflation in Pakistan.
Pakistan's annual electricity generation capacity reached 41,557 MW(Mega Watt), whereas, the total demand of electricity in residential and industrial sectors is around 31,000 MW(Mega Watt). There is a huge gap between the demand and supply of electricity, although the production is more than the demand. The supply sector is not been able supply more than 22,000 MW.
Following are the sources of electricity generation that contributed in the total of 41,557 MW in the fiscal year 2021-2022:
- Natural gas: 32.3% of total
- Hydroelectric: 24.7% of total
- Furnace oil: 14.3% of total
- Coal: 12.8% of total
- Nuclear: 8.8% of total
- Wind: 4.8% of total
- Solar:1.4% of total
Electricity consumption in different sectors:
- Household – 47%
- Commercial – 7%
- Industrial – 28%
- Agricultural – 9%
- Others – 8%
